The Marvelous Down Under...

As a proud Canadian, I like to share the talents of my fellow Canadians any chance I can. One of the best selling Canadian magazines is House and Home magazine, and I have recently discovered some of the great blogs over on their website, too. One of my favourites, is from Meg Crossley, Senior Editor with the magazine. Meg recently shared the renovation of her basement within the pages of House and Home and on her blog. To say it is a fabulous transformation would be an exercise in restraint. In my opinion, Meg has elevated her basement's status from sub-terrain to go-to haven, worthy of coming up for air...and heaps of praise. See for yourself!

Is it not perfection??

To see and read more, pick up House and Home`s fall 2009 Make-overs special issue, and be sure to visit Meg`s blog, here. Thank you for so graciously sharing your photos with us, Meg!

Take a Bow Tuesday...

Heaven help me, it's Wednesday, but lucky for you, you're used to my fumbling of the schedule!

Off we go!

I just had to share this talented blogger with you: Liberty Biberty is a delightful blog for those of us who have a lingering love affair with doll houses. She made the most adorable shabby chic bedding for hers recently, and you must check it out. Consider yourself forewarned: you might be there awhile!

It's that time of year..back to school and the usual onslaught of birthdays and invitations. Because we mums tend to have children who have birthdays themselves, sometimes we run out of great party ideas. Check out Tip Junkie's great post featuring a round-up of fun birthday party ideas for little girls. There is a link below it for boy's party ideas, too! With Sophie's birthday just around the corner, I will be pinching a few ideas myself!

Centsational Girl never sleeps. I am quite certain of it. Creating, repurposing, decorating and crafting...there is no end to her energy and inspiration. Check out her fall porch makeover. I am hanging my head in shame over it. Thanksgiving here is in eleven days and there is not a pumpkin to be found on my front porch.
For shame!!

My very favourite blogger - my sister, Wendy - recently proved that the addition of that one great showstopper in a room can make all the difference. Wendy revisited wallpaper and made a beautiful feature wall using it. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos as the paper is gorgeous! Check out her other posts as she chronicles the renovation of her Cape Cod style home. More eclectic and fun than me, Wendy is a fellow vintage lover and bargain hunter!

Manuela, an expert at embellishing pumpkins, has some handy, quick tricks to make those white beauties even more unique! Pop on over and borrow some of her ideas...you can tell her I sent you!

Take a Bow, Ladies!!

Small But Sweet

Before I left my daughter to go back home to the real world, she requested that I decorate her apartment for fall.Occasionally someone will leave me a comment, after I've shared holiday photos of my home, saying things like, "I wish I could decorate for the holidays but my home is too small." Or, "I can't afford to decorate." Or "I have no place to store decorations." Hopefully these photos will inspire those who live in smaller homes. My daughter keeps holiday decorations in plastic containers tucked under their bed. Most of the decorations were purchased at the dollar store, thrift store, or discount store. And as far as room to display, that's easy!
Place a few on top of furniture.
Clear a spot on a table or chest.Tuck them into a bookshelf.Replace candles for decorations.Hang 'em on a coat rack.

Homeward Bound...

(decorations from past holidays)

A bout with some strange virus had me awol for a spell, as you may or may not have noticed. It has left me feeling drained of energy at a time when I could really use a little extra. It is crunch time, with regards to magazine deadlines and such, and little miss Sophie is quite perturbed that nary a fall decoration is up and bidding welcome to the new season. As I visited the pharmacy at my local grocer tonight, I half-heartedly picked up a lone white/gray pumpkin that aims to be my first attempt at ushering in the season. Not as cheery as its orange cousin, that little pumpkin will serve to get me going on my preparations for Thanksgiving. Happily, my turkey is already bought and I am just awaiting a recipe Matthew Mead has promised to send me for carrot casserole, which looks so delicious and hearty. I plan to put more effort and style into this thankful meal, and may even take a little peek into my Halloween/fall bins and surprise my little girl with a decoration or two as she arrives home from school.

That's the plan, anyway.
Anyone have some spare energy they can send me?

(above photo source? I forget...)

New York, New York

My daughter treated me to a bus ride up to New York city for a weekend visit. We stayed with a really cute and gracious couple who live there, which was nice because they knew the area and could help us find great ways to spend our time. We spent much of Saturday shopping flea markets.
We had so much fun! It was part of a perfect day in the big city.

We went to one market that's housed in an old parking garage. Oh there were so many things that I would have loved to take home, but I resisted. We also shopped at the Hell's Kitchen flea market. I did find a little something there that I couldn't resist. This cute little suitcase.Isn't it the perfect topper for my stack?

REFLECTIONS ...............

I think that, being a blogger, we should all be allowed a little bit of poetic licence and, as this post is all about mirrors, this first picture doesn't really fit in, but it IS the most brilliant photograph and I wanted to use it .................BUT, water reflects, doesn't it , so I'm letting it in !!!! I think that I must have at least one mirror in every room in my house, and it's not all about vanity, although I have been known to glance in them as I pass !!!! They are great for making rooms look bigger, but I just like them as they can be really pretty and a lovely addition to any room.

Isn't this a lovely little bathroom, but, that's not what we're talking about, is it ? I think that it's only lovely because of the mirrors. Take them away and it wouldn't look so good, would it ?

Now, you obviously couldn't live like this but there are a lovely selection of mirrors to choose from here. Which one would you choose out of this little lot ?

I don't normally choose photographs with people in them, but isn't this pretty ? I love the finish of the walls and the two little mirrored candle sconces.

Doesn't the mirror look good in this one, just propped up against the wall.....you don't even have to get the drill out !!!!....and look at those dear little shoes on the table. Not too sure about the light fitting but, it actually seems to go.

Oh, what a gorgeous room. Another propped up mirror and, I love the empty frame, leaning against it....and what a great rocking horse and the lantern just fits in beautifully.

Here's another wonderful one. This room would be just as lovely without the Venetian mirror but, it just gives it some drama.

I just love the use of the over mantle as a bedhead...now, stop it, you lot...I can hear those naughty minds working !!!!

All this is, is an old mirrored cupboard, a few old bits and pieces on top of it and you've got something beautiful and at minimal cost............ Brilliant.

We probably all put pictures up the stairs but maybe not a collection of mirrors, but it works so well.

I really like this room as it's full of surprises and yet it remains very serene ..... look at those massive shells in the fireplace. Would you have done that ? I certainly wouldn't have thought of it , but it really is a focal point, and a nice one !!.......... and that beautiful pale, pale green works so well.

This photograph by Michael Eastman is showing us mirrors in an opulent setting which, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't think many of us live in a place like this !!!! If you do, could you email me...I'm due a holiday and could come and stay !!!!

You're spoilt for choice here. There are round ones, square ones, oval ones, ones with carving, etched ones, wooden ones ....I'll take one of each. !!!!

I have had this picture for ages, before I even started blogging and I think that it comes from a Scandanavian blog. I apologise for not crediting it, but if someone is reading this post and it belongs to them, please let me know. I had to show it as it is so beautiful and, as the Scandanavians do so well, it shows us what can be done with a few things that we have around our homes.
I NOW KNOW WHERE THIS PHOTOGRAPH CAME FROM. IT'S FROM THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BLOG www.inspirationivitt.blogspot.com GO AND VISIT. YOU WILL LOVE IT.

................... and finally, the mother of all things mirrored .....the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.

I'll leave you with this wonderful photograph of opulence and indulgence and remember....mirrors aren't just for looking in.
